  • The state-of-the-art project integrates advanced technologies such as drone-mounted LIDAR, 5D BIM®, and machine control systems

May 30, 2025, Bucharest: STRABAG Romania, as General Contractor, together with the client, the City Hall of Satu Mare, proudly celebrates the inauguration of the new cable-stayed bridge over the Someș River in Satu Mare, marking a significant achievement in the region’s infrastructure development and a benchmark of engineering excellence.

With a length of 644 meters, the new bridge is one of the most complex and ambitious infrastructure projects in Romania, requiring exceptional precision and the expertise of highly specialized professionals. Upon completion, the Satu Mare bridge is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Romania, thereby cementing its importance in the country’s modern infrastructure landscape. The construction project, valued at approximately 200 million lei, began in May 2020 and comes with a 15-year warranty.

The bridge features a harp-shaped design, supported by two 73-meter-high pylons and 56 high-strength steel cables. The suspension assembly supporting the bridge weighs 227 tons and is designed to bear a load of over 12,000 tons.

As part of its commitment to state-of-the-art technology and precision engineering, STRABAG implemented advanced solutions on the cable-stayed bridge over the Someș River. To ensure optimal alignment and tensioning of the suspension cables, the team used drone-mounted LIDAR technology to precisely map the anchor plates in the bridge piers. The high-resolution data obtained was processed over a 48-hour period using a high-performance server. This innovative approach underscores STRABAG’s commitment to delivering complex infrastructure projects with the highest standards of precision, safety, and technological excellence.

In line with STRABAG’s commitment to innovation and sustainability, the project also incorporated advanced construction methodologies, including 5D® Building Information Modeling (BIM) for integrated planning and execution. In addition, machine control and drone monitoring technologies were used to ensure precision and efficiency throughout the construction process.

“The Transylvania Bridge in Satu Mare represents our long-term commitment to building future-ready infrastructure solutions in Romania. Participating in the largest infrastructure project in Satu Mare in the last 40 years is a source of pride for the STRABAG team. With this achievement, STRABAG Romania reaffirms its leading role in the execution of complex projects nationwide,” said Herbert Schuster, Commercial Subdivision Manager at STRABAG Romania.

“This bridge means a great deal to Satu Mare. The Transylvania Bridge is more than a structure made of concrete, steel, and iron—it is a new symbol of the city of Satu Mare, an engineering marvel, and an economic landmark for our entire city. The Transylvania Bridge is built to endure, to unite, and to inspire. I would like to thank STRABAG for the professionalism and commitment it has demonstrated, even during the project’s most challenging moments. It is clear that this is a company that takes its responsibilities seriously,” said Gábor Kereskényi, Mayor of Satu Mare.

This project represents the largest investment in Satu Mare’s infrastructure in the last four decades. The structure includes four traffic lanes, two sidewalks for pedestrians, and a dedicated bike lane, facilitating connectivity between the northern and southern neighborhoods of the city.
