Compare This February, our community came together once again: curious, engaged, and ready to challenge how we build software in a world that demands both speed and stability. It was an evening of hand-on insights, new ideas and great company provided by Venkat Subranamiam* that delivered the keynote “Twelve essential practices to be effective in continuous delivery”.
The 12 practices Venkat shared are not trendy hacks. They are engineering fundamentals:
- Create good-quality code
- Write automated tests — unit, acceptance, functional, integration, contract
- Use fakes for end-to-end integration testing
- Keep all artifacts under version control
- Merge often, avoid long-running branches
- Keep all environments alike — dev, staging, testing, production
- Automate database schema updates
- Practice true Continuous Integration - compile, run tests, check styles, check complexity
- Build and verify clear stages - commit → acceptance → manual → performance → release
- Automate deployments (Infrastructure as Code)
- Define a clear release strategy
- Monitor applications in production
